I’ve seen a woman:
I’ve seen a woman with hurting eyes and the warmest smile
That gave me a preview into who I wanted to be—
Strong and willful in the harshest of times.
I’ve seen a woman:
Who always fed an army of seven hectic little ones and herself.
Whose stressed face inspired a 12-year old to hustle candy at school.
Who whupped disrespectful youth; Who gave the confused clarification.
Who cared for strangers in cold, white, secluded rooms.
Who gave the perfect pep talk in those I-can’t-go-on-situations.
Who was fruitless but more of a momma than actual birthers.
Who gained superman-like strength to carry the weak and powerless.
Who gave the greatness she promised me; Who expected greatness from me.
Who was fluent and bilingual when singing to society,
And taught me how to sing loud and well
And how to smile like I meant it
Even when I did or did not mean it.
I’ve seen all types of women:
From my Great Grand to my Sister—
Full-time Homemakers,
Picketers and Silent Protesters,
Nurses and unofficial Doctors,
Afro-combing Business Owners,
Penny-Pinchers, Nation-Lifters
In-their-own-right kind of Queens,
As-caring-as-your-momma Neighbors,
and Soul food Chefs
and Soulful Trainers
and Truth Teachers
and Passionate Preachers
—The Real Women
And I will be relentless, too.

To The Men Who Burnt Witches
There is witchcraft in our blood,
in our bones we carry the magic
that you could not burn away.
You see, fire does not eat fire.
Your mother would have taught you that
if the world hadn’t convinced her
that despite her body being able
to bring life into this world,
she is not a magical thing.
Maybe the witches you burned
were the daughters of something
more holy than you could ever handle.
So you set them alight for being different,
forgetting that even the son of your God
was once condemned for being too pure,
too beautiful, too different for this world.
History devoured your name,
but we have never forgotten
what you di

the daughter universe
Lonely men, I’ve noticed, will pay off their little houses
and live in them by themselves until they burn down
from a dead gas pilot and 80’s paperback philosophy.
In other words, out on one hundred highway north at dusk,
which is a daylight’s ride from the sack, the dunes simply
spill out on the road; the crazy thing being, nobody’s worried.
Keep driving until the damn thing just ends at the last rogue pier
on the island’s tip. There’s a dark night beach on the right
and if you wade into the waves, about 130 feet, east by northeast,
you’ll find a miraculous shoal where the salt from a trillion g
